wintersun...
The largest celebration of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, swing dancing
& hot rods in Australia - in fact, one of the biggest of
it's type anywhere in the world...
Wintersun is a 10 day nostalgia festival held on the gold coast,
queensland, climaxing on the Queen's Birthday holiday
weekend in mid/early June each year...
We've included pikkies on this page of events, friends, ourselves
& heaps of other stuff at Wintersun's from 1997 to 2007...
We hope you enjoy seeing them...

We're away each year at the Wintersun Rock 'n' Roll Festival.
And 2007 was the BIG ONE - the 20th Anniversary Festival.
Wintersun is a 10 day retro nostalgia festival, held in June
each year in the coastal towns of Coolangatta & Tweed
Heads on the Queensland / New South Wales border,
leading up to the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend.
The 2007 Festival commenced on Friday 1st June - &
climaxed with the “Best Of Wintersun” open air
concert on Monday 11th June at Kirra sportsground.
Many events are free, some are in the streets, others are
in many of the local clubs, pubs & shopping centres.
Wintersun show-cases over 1000 Hot Rods, Custom &
Classic Cars, over 100 bands & performers, retro movies,
street parades & competitions - & there's just heaps
& heaps of rock 'n' roll, rockabilly & swing dancing.
Many were pleased that the very popular Wintersun dance
competitions were back after a year's rest - the competition
was fierce & the standard was always exceptionally high.
Wintersun is HUGE - with visitors coming from just about
everywhere - Australia, New Zealand, the USA, UK,
Europe & Asia - & after Brisbane, there's more
Melbournians than from any other location.
The Wintersun website includes a complete program - with
lots of info on venues, bands, other attractions,
accommodation details & merchandise.
As well as "dancin' our sox off", we also displayed our
gorgeous shoes, clothes & memorabilia at the Wintersun
nostalgia markets - on the Coollangatta foreshore
reserve from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th June.
If you aren't yet aware of Wintersun, then you can find
When we're away, we monitor our emails whenever possible
from various Internet Cafes - but please be aware that
there may be delays in responding to your enquiries.
We then do a complete "catch-up" when we get back.

Wintersun also held "Elvis Performance Competitions",
including a very competitive "Elvis Junior section"
We were delighted when one of our very favourite gorgeous
customers, Kobe "Elvis" White, took off the Junior comp
Kobe was certainly "the talk of Wintersun", with quite a number
of our customers commenting on Kobe's incredibly mature &
professional performances - & the power of his voice.
Here's what the Herald-Sun newspaper had to say about Kobe:

Johnny O'Keefe
Johnny O'Keefe has been described as 'The Wild One', Australia's 'King of Rock'N'Roll' and the 'Father of the Australian Recording Industry'...
He was all of these, but above all, he was the greatest entertainer that this country has ever seen...
Johnny was Australia's Billy Haley & Elvis Presley - "all rolled up in one"...
With his backing band the "Dee Jays", Johnny took Australia by storm with such fabulous hits as: "The Wild One", "Shout", "She's My Baby", "I'm Counting On You", "She Wears My Ring", "Don't You Know", "Move Baby Move", "Why Do They Doubt Our Love", "Come on & Take My Hand", "Sing", "So Tough", "Ready For You", "I Thank You" - far too many hits to list here...
In all, Johnny released over 50 singles, 50 EP's and 100 albums during his 25 year career...
Johnny toured America, performing in 36 major cities and appearing on the top rating 'American Bandstand' & 'Ed Sullivan Shows' - all firsts for an Australian entertainer...
Australians were stunned at the news of Johnny's death on October 6, 1978, but he has left a wonderful musical legacy ...
Johnny O'Keefe was a Superstar and truly an Australian Entertainment Legend...
|

John "Catfish" Purser was the drummer in Johnny O'Keefe's backing band - the "Dee Jays"...
Catfish had a "dream"...
He wanted to see Johnny O'Keefe recognized for what he was - Australia's best-ever entertainer, the "King" of Aussie rock 'n' roll & the pioneer of popular music recording in this Country...
Catfish knew that every single rock 'n' roll artist in Australia to this present day, owed a huge debt of gratitude to Johnny O'Keefe, in "setting the stage" for their own successful careers...
In January 2000, well known Australian Sculptor, Dr. Alex Sandor Kolozsy went to work on the 3 metre sculpture...
Then after 5 years of planning, the Catfish dream finally came true...
The fabulous bronze statue of Johnny O'Keefe shown immediately above, was officially unveiled by Catfish at Wintersun 2004...
A fitting tribute to one of Australia's favourite sons - Johnny O'Keefe...
And a tribute to the "Catfish dream"...
|
a "google" search for Johnny O'Keefe" brings up almost 40,000 entries...
here's a half-dozen links to get you started...
yes, the "dee jays" under the leadership of catfish are
still pumpin' out some fabulous rock 'n' roll...
